Earlier this week, 10 WBNS reported on its website that Columbus and the surrounding area sustained extensive residential and property damage after extreme tornadoes and hail storms passed through the area. The storm moved through Columbus early Wednesday morning and left a trail of destruction to homes, cars, and commercial properties.

If you or anyone you know were impacted by the harsh weather, here is some information you need to know about the damaging effects of wind and hail, safety tips in a storm, and local relief resources.

The Negative Impact of Hail & Heavy Winds

Hail Damage

Hail is a type of ice pellet that forms during severe thunderstorms. Hail can range in size but hail that is around  1” in diameter can cause irreparable damage to things like cars and extensive damage to your roof, home, cars, and property. The damage can range from denting roofs and gutters, ripping screen doors, and cracking your siding to shattering your windows and can hurt the structural integrity of your home.

Wind Damage

Harsh winds can cause significant damage to your home from blowing off shingles and roofing panels to tearing off whole sections of your roof. Harsh winds can also cause damage to your windows, siding, and gutter systems, and can blow down power lines. During a tornado or harsh wind, it’s important to take cover and watch out for flying debris and tree limbs.

According to 10 WBNS, Columbus residents reported substantial roof and structural damage from fallen trees, scattered debris, widespread power outages, and even completely blown-off roofs.

Storm Safety Precautions

There are multiple ways that you can prepare for a storm and even reduce potential damage to your home. Before a big storm, it’s always a good idea to move your cars to a safe and covered place, bring in any outside furniture, and clear out any weak branches near your home.

During a Storm

Make sure you and your pets stay inside your house and away from any windows or doors. You can also close your curtains to create a barrier between yourself and any broken class that can occur from high winds and hail. Don’t use electrical appliances during lightning, seek shelter in your basement or bathroom with no windows, and stay safe until the storm has passed.

After a Storm,

After you have ensured your safety, you can inspect your roofing and house for any damage. If you find any debris, safely clear it away from your home. If you’ve sustained extensive damage from the storm, call a roofing professional to come and inspect your home. You’ll want to find a local roofing company that can provide you with thorough and timely storm damage repair and restoration services.
